How to get my ps2 online?

i have tried everthing and i read hundreds of internet sites and still no luck i called sony and still no luck i have a cat ethernet cable i dont have a router do i need one i read you could get online without one i used the disc that came with it but every time i try to connect it says cable disconnected and my cables are connected i have been trying for a week i really need HELP!!!!!!!!!How to get my ps2 online?
